Total Knee Replacement For Gordy Haynes

Knee Replacement Ends Years Of Pain…

Do you need an Orlando total knee replacement? Well I did and it’s was a long journey for me. Twelve years in fact, before I finally got relief from one of Orlando’s Best Orthopedic Surgeons, Dr. J. Dean Cole. Dr. Cole did a Total Knee Replacement of my left knee years ago. Soon, he’ll do the same for my right knee.

In 2004, (First learned I needed a Orlando total knee replacement) Debbie and I were living our dream on Anna Maria Island on the West Coast of Florida. I was semi-retired and we just bought a home on the island. It was an exciting time because we got a great price on the water front home because it had numerous structural issues. Things that discouraged most would be buyers. But as a general contractor for thirty years, I’ve seen and done about all you can when it comes to residential real estate. So, to that end, I was busy working hands on doing major renovation with this new home in paradise for Debbie and I.

Then one day I noticed, my left knee was very sore and tender. I could see some swelling, but thought in time it would get better. I just cowboy-ed up and keep going. But the pain only got worse and it continued to do so everyday. Even though I favored and it and iced it up as I could. Finally, I woke up one morning and couldn’t bend my left leg. At all!

I got an appointment with a great Orthopedic Surgeon in Sarasota, Florida named Dr. Bright. He x-rayed it and explained my knee was bone on bone. He was surprised I had gone on so long and never had been seen before for pain. He then went on to remove 33 CC’s of fluid from my knee and it was so relieving. But at the end of the day, I was 56 years old , needed to still work to some degree and had no insurance that would cover it all. I wasn’t old enough for Medicare and just had no option but to learn to live my life with pain.

The first process is behavior modification. You learn things that make it worse and things that seem to be better tolerated that others. Then over the counter pain relievers and eventually, you begin the cortisone injections every three months.  Then after a few years, I learned of a different, longer lasting injection called Supartz. You could get two injections a year. That process worked with me for three years, then became useless.

Then in 2008, like millions of Americans, we lost our home and came back to Orlando. We had owned a rental home and had just enough pennies to renovate it. The pain and pressure to provide for my family was something, like millions of Americans, I’ll never forget. Your life to a great degree is ruled by the pain.

I had no choice but to endure and continue to work as hard as I could to take care of mama. I reached 65, but the burden of losing everything meant that even though Medicare would pay for a knee replacement, I couldn’t afford to miss working. Through an additional three years, I continued to work, build my business and save as much as we could. Then in 2016, as our finances finally became stabilized to some degree, the possibility of getting a new knee became a more exciting consideration. The fact was, my knee lasted just to a point in time that we saved enough to get by, but the pain had reached a point that was 100% unbearable. The timing was clearly meant to be.

The shots no longer worked and so I started researching who might be the best fit for me. Orlando and Central Florida in general has many great Orthopedic Surgeons. However, when you look closely, there will be one special Surgeon that rises to the top as Orlando Best Orthopedic Surgeon. For me, that was Dr. J. Cole.

With amazing luck, I was able to get an appointment and the experience from start to finish was nothing short of amazing. His team and general protocol from start to finish was the most organized and professional structure I’ve ever seen. They know to the letter EVERY STEP that will be involved. From meet and greet, pre-op planning, education of every aspect that will be involved from before the surgery, during the surgery and what comes after the surgery. Your spouse or caregiver will part of the education class and you’ll have contacts every step of the way for anything that arises.

After my Primary Care Doctor gave me clearance, I was scheduled to go in for surgery on Tuesday, August 23rd. The surgery took about an hour and a half, two hours in recovery and that evening I was walking. I was discharged the the next day, Wednesday the 24th. In home therapy came for two weeks. At two and a half weeks I was cleared to drive and on the third week, started out patient physical with Orlando’s Physical Therapy Specialist.

The original knee pain from the arthritis was 100% gone when the surgery was complete. There was and will be a part of the physical therapy and recovery that will require you endure some degree of pain in order to regain your range of motion. You will have a difficult time sleeping for the first 4 weeks, but then things get closer to normal at bedtime. You will slowly wean off the pain medications you took to control your pain and your appetite will begin to come back as well.

My physical therapy will last for 6 weeks. At 4 weeks I was off the cane and actually did an inspection. I walk with little or no pain now and no longer take any medications but Aleve. The physical therapy is the key. Without it, you’d never progress to your full range of motion and natural walk and stance. Orlando physical therapist, in general,  are very friendly, caring and knowledgeable about the process your surgeon will prescribe to get you back to normal.

Life has already taking on an amazing new lease for us. It’s so good to walk and work without the pain of bone on bone, worn out arthritic knees.

If you suffer from knee, hip or shoulder pain, call the office of Dr. J. Dean Cole today. Chances are he’ll be able to give you back a peace of life you’ve lost for a long time. I know he and his team did for me.

Thanks to Dr. J. Dean Cole and his amazing team of professionals. I’ll be indebted always.
